Walking
on Holy Ground by Judy Shelly
Editorial
reminds readers that health care must focus on physical
and spiritual needs. How can the two be integrated? When
the spiritual realm is approached in nursing, something
special happens. Nurses discover that they are standing
on holy ground.
University
of Arizona Shootings by Mary C. Vincenz
On October 28, 2002, three nursing professors at the College
of Nursing, University of Arizona, were shot and killed
by a nursing student. The author, also a nursing professor,
describes the events of that morning. The story is a moving
tribute to the memory of Cheryl McGaffic, Robin Rogers
and Barbara Monroe. Additional information and discussion

Caring
for Strangers by Sonja Grypma and Sandra L Jamison
A historical account of the development of nursing built
around the concept of compassionate and holistic care
of sick and wounded strangers. This concept is an expression
of Christian faith. Motivating, guiding and sustaining
principles for nursing are noted. Nursing is viewed as
vocare (being called by God for a special purpose).
Measuring
the Spirit of Nursing by Judith Allen Shelly
Results of the JCN Nursing Satisfaction Survey indicate
that spirituality seems to have a strong bearing on nursing
satisfaction. Interpersonal relationships add to and distract
from satisfaction. Nursing satisfaction seems to increase

Prayer for Sarah: Crossing Cultures with a Tender Heart
by Kimberele S Deller
Deller's tender care for a young Muslim woman experiencing
a miscarriage is a powerful example of caring for the
physical and spiritual needs of one whose faith is different
from her own. Article provides insight in Muslim care
of the dead and cultural mores.
Cultural
Desire: The Spiritual Key to Cultural Competence by
Josepha Campinha-Bacote
The author has constructed a model regarding cultural
competence built around cultural awareness, cultural knowledge,
cultural skill and cultural encounter. She has discovered
that these do not necessarily amount to cultural competence.
Cultural desire is key to completing the model for competent
care.
Wrestling
with the Spirit's Nudging by Natasha Pyles Tompkins
The author recounts times when she has felt the Holy Spirit
nudging her to address a patient's spiritual needs. An
honest article admitting that those nudgings are not always
followed.

shares short accounts on her interactions with various
patients. She reminds nurses of the need to maintain homeostasis-the

Quenstedt-Moe
The author makes a case for blending parish nursing and

Faith to Work by Verna Benner Carson

regarding the blending of roles. Carson believes the model

a) legal implications, b) priorities of parish nursing

Debriding
a Wounded Heart by Karen Miedema
An elderly woman remains distant until Miedema faces a
dilemma. When Miedema asks the woman if she can pray with
her, a noticeable change begins and a wounded heart is
released.

Holy Moment by Margaret L. Turley
Turley shares her experience with a young man she met
on an extended care floor. Paul did not speak, but one
difficult night he joined his nurse in song. It was the
only time she heard his voice.
